Four Restaurants To Try In Nuremberg, Germany

For a small city, Nuremberg (known as Nürnberg in German) has a number of good restaurants, particularly German and local Franconian cuisine. Here, we review four from our recent trip.

The Best Restaurants in Nuremberg

Goldenes Posthorn

The Goldenes Posthorn is located just a block off the central square. It features local Bavarian, Franconian and German specialties. On this trip, we ordered a plate of 8 of the little Nuremberger bratwursts with kraut. The sausages came with a large basket of pretzels and we chased it with a Radler (a lighter beer cut with juice—refreshing).

The light wood paneling adds to the ambiance and charm. They accommodate large tour groups, so getting a table can be a bit of a challenge.

Bratwurst Roslein

Much in the same vein, Bratwurst Roslein is on a small square about two blocks away. During the Christmas Market, this was actually the partner cities market. Inside, large tables were arranged with groups of various sizes devouring local specialties. I consumed a fatty pork shoulder with salad, a delicious squash soup and a nice white wine. This place can get very lively!

Restaurant Oberkrainer am Hauptmarkt

The Restaurant Oberkrainer am Hauptmarkt (i.e., The Terrace) overlooks the main market square and the main Christmas Market. It has the location and markings of a traditional tourist trap, but it isn’t. Service was a little abrupt, but the food was excellent. The pork medallions with mushrooms were heavenly! The Wiener schnitzel was the best I’ve ever had.

It was so good we ended up coming back a second night. On the second trip to this fine establishment, I had the Radler to drink and the beef steak with peppercorn sauce.

Sangam Indian

When we tired of German or Franconian food, we tried dinner at Sangam Indian restaurant. This lively place right on Koenigstrasse packed people in every night of the week. To drink, Laura had the Montepulciano red wine and I had the Radler. We split the vegetable samosa appetizer, which came already cut in half (four pieces) so it kind of fell apart. We both had the tandoori chicken masala (think chicken tikka masala back home), which offered some excellent spice.

On a previous trip, I had dined at Da Claudio, and it was excellent. It seems that standards at Da Claudio are still high because tables are in high demand. We tried on two different nights to get a reservation and they were completely booked up!

For a small compact city, Nuremberg offers an impressive number of excellent restaurants. After a long day exploring Nuremberg’s complicated history, these are great places to relax and enjoy yourself.

Traveling alone in germany is proving both exhilarating and frightening at the same time! As I do not speak a lick of German, finding places to eat that offer english/german menus is key.

Do you suggest any places that you know to be a bit more english friendly? :)

All of the restaurants in this post are English-friendly. You'll be fine here. As a city, Nuremberg is very English-friendly given the long-standing U.S. military presence nearby and the major international companies in the area. Hope that helps!

Thanks Andrea. We're still getting around to getting our Nuremberg Christmas Market post up, but yes, it is amazing!

I went to Nuremberg for the Christmas markets a couple of years ago. I didn't get to try much of the local food but I loved the city and have been back again since then. Love the post WWII photo of the city. It's amazing how they were able to rebuild after that devastation.
